E-Learning Initiative

The Community E-Learning Initiative by Starts With One provides free online tutoring to youth and adults in the Greater Toronto Area. Founded in 2020, our mission is to ensure that quality education is accessible to all, especially those from immigrant and low-income backgrounds. We offer tailored lessons in English, Math, Science, and more, fostering a supportive learning environment where students can thrive. Our community-led approach focuses on mutual aid, bringing together volunteers and students to build connections across ethnic and socioeconomic lines.

What is the Community E-Learning Initiative?

The Starts With One E-Learning Initiative was founded on March 30th, 2020, in response to the coronavirus outbreak in Canada. Since then, we have provided hundreds of hours of free tutoring and are currently providing over 65 hours of free tutoring each and every week. Our team has realized that access to quality teaching instruction is an essential service and we will be continuing this program in the long-term, even after COVID-19 has subsided and school resumes.

We offer:

  • Basic Homework Help

  • University Preview Lessons

  • English, Math & Science Teaching

  • And more!

All online lessons are completely FREE of charge and via Zoom, Skype and/or WhatsApp.

All ages are welcome: we have adult students registered as well! A minimum of one hour of teaching instruction is guaranteed each week per student.

What differentiates our E-Learning Initiative from other tutoring programs?

Starts With One’s E-Learning program focuses on providing mutual aid to our communities. Our volunteers and executive members are all a part of the GTA community themselves, and understand that community service exists for the purposes of building solidarity, rather than for the sake of service itself. Our students and parents are continually involved in the design and operations of our program, as well as its advocacy work. Thus, we provide a service of mutual aid, focused on community learning and advocacy for individuals of all ages, predominantly from immigrant, low-income backgrounds in the GTA.

Who Do We Serve?

Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, from Chinese to Somali to Syrian! Many of our students have come here on refugee status or have recently immigrated. Most live in the Toronto area, mainly in St. James Town & Regent Park neighbourhoods. Currently, all the students we serve identify as a visible minority group. Our students are aged from kindergarten to adult! We also offer ESL support for parents of students in our program.
